Hey there everyone, I am Mike Kelsey, otherwise known as MLK!

My story starts in a local music store, where I first fell in love with the sounds that moved people and the stories behind them. That passion led me through a variety of roles across the music industry—each one deepening my connection to the culture and the community that fueled it.

I’ve been a musician for as long as I can remember, and that instinct for rhythm and emotion has always guided me. As the producer of the top rated Time Tunnel on WHUR-FM in Washington, DC I got to share timeless grooves with a dedicated audience—always hunting for that perfect track to set the scene.

Now, I bring that same spirit to Funkin From the BassMent, a platform I created to elevate the voices, stories, and sounds that deserve more shine. It’s not just a show—it’s my way of celebrating authenticity, connection, and the undeniable power of funk to bring us all a little closer. 

For me, music is making the listener travel back to a different time in their lives.  Whether the journey is good or bad, happy or sad…
